gérer son critique intérieur/ fooling the inner critique

(Robin Atkins)

I do love beads, textiles and threads of colors. I also love the idea to give an artifact some meaning with chosen symbols beyond the "decorative" or"lovely" effect. Hence the creation of "talismans", tell-tale or bearer of intents when they are designed for a special person like the traditional societies for whom the artifacts were invested with power. For exemple: magical protection with embroideries, specific designs, stones, shells, seeds, beads, mirrors, bells and so on...

For my second attempt with beadwork, interested by Robin Atkins approach, I have tried to let my hands choose the beads and place them without preliminary idea of the result  I wanted to have except the idea to work on my creative blocks.
Usually I use to controle what I do. So I needed to repeat myself: cool! Don't worry ! Amuse yourself...
You have nothing to prove... In short, to encourage the little girl to enjoy rummaging her treasury box!

Anxious in the very beginning, with some uneasyness and sadness, I began little by little to relax and to let myself go on the process: Don't think!...

And surprise! As the work went along, I could see how my multicolored sun , representing all my creativity full of fantasy could n't spread being impeded ( even though full of life) by the rigour and  statecrafts of my mother symbolised by the blue cristal beads on the left.
Control versus fantasy!  where the little blue beads form a barrier dividing the talisman in two parts, I have chosen to  connect these two parts with a colored string of love sewed crosswise behind the talisman and forming a tassel on the left side as a way to let a colored healing energy circulate freely .

Watching the result I can't say if it's nice but I feel touched and it means something for me.

I say thanks to Robin for this wonderful technique for reconciliation with ourselves and close relatives

In Robin's tips you can find this article about "fooling the inner critic":

Fooling the Inner Critic

One way to fool the inner critic is to play, rather than plan. Play with the objects you love. Go sit with your beads. Fondle them. Run your fingers through them. Put them against your cheek. Pick a couple that seem compelling, and set them aside. Ask yourself this: “If I were to make something with these beads, what might it be?” Instantly something will probably pop into your mind. Go with that. Don’t give any thought to any other possibilities. Just go with the first thing that came to mind. Start immediately. Play; don’t plan.

The name for this is working improvisationally – without a plan. It fools the inner critic because there isn’t a yardstick in the mind by which to judge your work. The inner critic feeds it’s terrible criticisms by comparing your work to your visions, your dreams, your plans, and to the plans and visions of others.

Let’s say you are making a kit or following a pattern. If you follow it exactly, the inner critic may say you are not original, and therefore not an artist. If you deviate from the original, the inner critic may say your version is not as good.

In my opinion, the inner critic is most harmful with those who attempt to create original art by first conceptualizing and visualizing. The more you dream, the more you create visualized perfection, the bigger the yardstick against which your work is measured. Understanding this phenomenon can help. It may also be helpful to play more and plan less. (Robin Atkins)

  5. "Play, rather than plan"...I had to swallow hard to pass this line...Controlled Chaos..more my speed.I have to tell you though,I was so inspired by this post.We often forget to just play..which is one of the reasons why I really never participate in challenges.I dont like to be rushed,I dont want my art to feel rushed, because at the end of the day,it shows.
You have given me much to think about here, and I am thankful.Warmest Regards,Cat

  7. Glad to receive your comment Cat! Yes playing is difficult in a society where hard work is more valued than pleasure. this makes me think of the expression: "to kill the time" heard for the activities of children and ...retired persons.Horrible is n't it? I would love to live in a world where everybody woud n't be ashamed to "enjoy the time"!!! May your art give you
a lot of joy and happiness!
